New Braunfels Volunteers in Medicine operates a medical and dental clinic forty hours per week providing free services to low-income, uninsured residents of Comal County. The clinic seeks to understand and serve the health and wellness needs of the medically underserved by providing quality, compassionate and personalized care in a faith-based, caring environment.
Volunteers in Medicine removes many barriers that currently keep the working poor from receiving medical and dental care. Offering services without charges eliminates the large barrier of finances, but the clinic also assists parents of young children by providing volunteers to entertain children while their parents receive treatment. Although a few local organizations offer similar services at below-market rates, many families currently go without treatment because even small fees are barriers to care.
A full-time physician’s assistant and medical assistant serve patients during regular business hours, and physicians volunteer their services to extend the number of patients served. Pediatric care includes episodic illness care, immunizations and well-child examinations to evaluate physical and emotional growth and development, as well as overall health. Adult care includes episodic illness care, routine gynecology, disease screening, well-adult care to evaluate risk factors for disease development and preventative care measures, and diagnosis and management of mild to moderate chronic diseases.
Local dentists volunteer their services in the clinic to provide basic dental care. Medical and dental professionals carefully refer patients, as necessary, to local specialists who agree to provide discounted services to Volunteers in Medicine patients.
